PCB selection committee considers Dean Jones as new head coach

Lahore :  Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) coach selection committee is thinking to appoint former Australian retired cricketer Dean Mervyn Jones as new head coach of the team, reported on Thursday.

Pakistan’s early exit from the World T20, which the West Indies won, prompted a wave of criticism, with widespread calls to revamp the country’s domestic structure.

According to sources, news regarding considering name of Dean Jones as head coach is roaming but the nominated candidate has not enough experience for the post as maximum five years of international experience is required to hire a coach.

However, Dean Jones had coached Islamabad United team in Pakistan Super League (PSL) to the victory.

The newly-appointed coach would train the team in upcoming England series in July.

Earlier, former head coach Waqar Younis resigned weeks after team’s humiliating exit from the World Twenty20 tournament at the group stage.

"I am resigning from my post today with a heavy heart," he told reporters in Lahore.

Referring to a report written in the aftermath of the World Twenty20 in India that was widely leaked in the Pakistani press, he added: "I want my recommendations to be implemented. They were not acted on when I first made them in 2015."

In his leaked report, Younis criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to not give him a say in the selection process and blasted the captaincy of Shahid Afridi.

"We lost to New Zealand, (the) Asia Cup and the World T20 due to poor captaincy. Over several occasions, I had made it clear that Shahid Afridi was not performing with the bat, ball or as a captain but I was not listened to," he said.

Majid Khan’s name proposed for PCB chairman slot, NA told

Briefing the National Assembly on Pakistan cricket team’s poor performance in the World T20, Federal Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination Riaz Pirzada Friday stated that major changes are expected in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The National Assembly session resumed at 10:30 am with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in the chair.
Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) Members of National Assembly (MNA) Khalida Mansoor and Surriya Asghar invited the attention of the Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination to a matter of urgent public importance regarding the poor performance of Pakistan Cricket Team during the T-20 World Cup 2016, causing grave concern amongst the public.
Addressing the House, Riaz Pirzada said that Majid Khan’s name has been forwarded to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for PCB chairman’s post.
He said the national cricket team disappointed the nation with their poor performance.
Bowlers did well but batsmen’s performance was disappointing, he added.
He said the players will face consequences if they won’t play according to aspirations of the people.
The minister further told that former coach Waqar Younis in his report revealed that there is no single cricketer in the PCB. All the board members have been appointed through references.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan ruled out the possibility of his resignation in the wake of the national team’s debacle in the Asia Cup and World T20 events.
After speculations were rife that Khan, fed up with the leakage of confidential reports from the board and even otherwise, had decided to tender his resignation, he told the media last Friday in Lahore he has no intentions of resigning.
The 82-year-old insisted there was no truth in the media speculations he had decided to resign.
“There is no truth in the rumours that I am considering stepping down,” he added. The PCB chief said he had got the report of the fact-finding committee and would comment on it after going through it.
Pakistan were knocked out of the World T20 after losing three of its four group matches, including a loss to rival India. Khan has also served as PCB Chairman from 2003-2006.
The fact-finding committee was formed to find out the causes for the team’s poor show in recent T20 internationals including the two major events.
After the WT20, Shahid Afridi resigned as T20 captain and head coach Waqar Younis has already stepped down from the post.
The PCB recently appointed Sarfraz Ahmed as new captain of Pakistan T20 team.

PCB disbands selection committee, Waqar resigns as head coach

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday disbanded its national selection committee with immediate effect.
The development comes just hours after the head coach Waqar Younis resigned from his position. The PCB has set up a panel comprising former captains Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja to find a new coach.
“I have served Pakistan cricket to the best of my ability and urge the people not to forget them,” said Waqar while talking to reporters outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The 44-year-old former captain said he was not making the call under any pressure and added that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is like a home to him and he would not want to say anything against it.
“I was to serve as Pakistan coach for three more months. I request the PCB to invest my salary of those months into the country’s domestic circuit,” he said.
Waqar clarified that his decision to resign is not a reaction to the team’s dismal show at the Asia Cup T20 or an early exit from the recently concluded World T20.
“The controversy surrounding the leak of my report is giving a bad name to the country. My recommendations are being taken out of context in media. I am not resigning because of the team’s losses. The recommendations I had given to the board were not implemented upon and this is the reason,” said Waqar.

Windies board offers talks with new T20 champs

KOLKATA: The West Indies board has offered talks with its new World Twenty20 champions to defuse a long running dispute saying it wants to find ways of ensuring players don’t turn their backs on international cricket.

The Windies’ victory in the final in Kolkata on Sunday night was soured by an outburst from skipper Darren Sammy who said it was disappointing the team had received no support from the board before the match.

Dave Cameron, the board’s president responded by calling the comments inappropriate in a statement that reserved its warmest words for the tournament organisers rather than the victorious players.

However, Cameron did offer an olive branch by saying the board would meet players after the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) next month to persuade them to play for the West Indies rather than opt for lucrative Twenty20 leagues.

“We want to see how we can find common ground in ensuring that the best players in the region are available for selection for West Indies teams”, Cameron said.

“We are fully aware of the financial rewards on offer in the lucrative international T20 leagues but we believe deeply in the importance of cricket to the people of the region and of West Indies cricket s place in world cricket. It is therefore a priority to have all of our players competing and available for selection.”

Relations between the board and team have often been poisonous in recent years with players furious over what they see as inadequate financial rewards.

A pay dispute two years ago led to the team flying home in the middle of a tour of India and the players only reluctantly agreed to sign contracts for the World T20 a few weeks before the tournament began.

Many senior players, such as Chris Gayle, no longer play Test matches instead turning out in T20 leagues where they can earn more money in six weeks than they are paid by their board in a year.

When the West Indies were thrashed by Australia in a Test series at the turn of the year, Gayle and Sammy were both unavailable for selection as they were playing in Australia’s Big Bash T20 tournament.

Amid growing fears that the proliferation of T20 leagues is turning some players away from Test matches, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said it wants to draw up a time table to avoid clashes.

Many of the West Indies T20 champions are expected to play in the IPL which begins this coming weekend and ends in late May.

“We are aware of that schedule hence the plan to meet at that time”,  said Cameron. “We will also engage the ICC on this so that we protect not only the rich heritage and legacy of West Indies cricket but also its future”, he added.

Sarfraz optimistic about T20 captaincy challenge

KARACHI: Newly appointed Twenty20 skipper Sarfraz Ahmed on Tuesday said he was optimistic about taking on the challenge of leading the Pakistan side.

“It is an honour for me to lead Pakistan. Captaincy is a tough task as the whole nation pins their hopes on you,” said Sarfraz.

The 28-year-old gutsy wicketkeeper-batsman was well aware of the challenges a Pakistan captain can face in the process of leading the side. “I will try to understand what players demand of me and to make sure that they do the same,” Sarfraz said.

“The PCB has appointed me as captain so I will listen to them and will try to convey my thoughts to them as well,” he added.

Earlier today, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that it was handing over the reigns of T20 captaincy to Sarfraz, days after Shahid Afridi stepped down from the position following disastrous twin campaigns in the Asia Cup and World T20 Championship.

“I spoke to Sarfraz this morning and conveyed to him that he was our natural choice for this position. His appointment is open-ended. I wish him good luck in his new role,” the PCB quoted chairman Shaharyar Khan in a press release.

Sarfraz was appointed vice-captain of Pakistan's One-Day International (ODI) and T20 teams last year.

Afridi faced harsh criticism after his team lost three of their four games in the WT20, failing to reach the semi-finals. The PCB had formed a special committee to probe the reasons for the team's dismal performance in the Asia Cup and WT20.

According to recommendations forwarded to PCB chairman Shahryar Khan, Sarfraz, who earlier led the Quetta Gladiators team to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) finals, was the committee's top recommendation to replace Afridi as captain of the national side.

Last week, sources had told Green Shirts that both team manager Intikhab Alam and head coach Waqar Younis, who earlier appeared before the committee, had blamed Afridi for the team's poor show in the two tournaments.

The development comes a day after the PCB disbanded its national selection committee, and Waqar Younis resigned from his position as head coach. The PCB has set up a panel comprising former captains Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja to find a new coach.

Acting on the recommendations of the  special committee appointed to probe the national team’s failures, the PCB has promised that it will take a series of short and long-term steps to overhaul Pakistan cricket.

According to the PCB, the inquiry committee has concluded that the primary reason behind Pakistan’s below-par showing is the low fitness levels of the national players.

“The special committee highlighted fitness of the players as a major issue in the poor performance of Pakistan team. The PCB will henceforth make fitness standards achievements conditional in the players’ contracts and with fines to be imposed on players not achieving the desired standards,” said the PCB in a statement on Monday.

The Board revealed that it will send the national team players to a boot camp in the mountains of Abbottabad ahead of this summer’s tour of England.

“Pakistan team’s next assignment is in England in the English summer. In order to prepare for the tough tour and as recommended by special committee a boot camp is being planned in coordination with Pakistan Army in Abbottabad to make the players physically fit for the England tour,” it said.

The statement added that, in order to curb the negativity in media regarding PCB, it would also appoint a dedicated spokesman for the board to brief the media on regular basis on all issues.
