India to start ICC Champions Trophy title defence against Pakistan as event schedule announced with one year to go

Defending champion India is seeded second and leads Group B, which also comprises third seed South Africa, fifth seed Sri Lanka and eighth seed Pakistan.

•    The ticket ballot for the tournament will open on 1 September and close at the end of the month on 30 September. All remaining tickets will then go on general sale in October

India will launch its ICC Champions Trophy title defence against traditional rival Pakistan when the two Asian powerhouses go head to head at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 4 June 2017. The 18-day tournament will run from 1 to 18 June 2017 and will also see matches played at the Cardiff Wales Stadium in Cardiff and The Oval in London.

A couple of days before this mouth-watering all-Asian clash, Australia and New Zealand will lock horns in a repeat of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final at Edgbaston. Event host and 2004 and 2013 finalist England will take on Bangladesh in the tournament opener at The Oval, which will also be the venue for a battle between former champions Sri Lanka and South Africa on 3 June.

The tournament schedule was announced at The Oval exactly a year before the first ball is bowled in the tournament, in which a total of 15 matches - including three knock-out games - will be played over two and a half weeks.

The top eight sides on the ICC ODI Team Rankings on 30 September 2015 have qualified for this tournament, with world champion Australia seeded number-one. It heads Group A, which also includes fourth seed New Zealand, sixth seed England and seventh seed Bangladesh, who will be returning to this competition for the first time since 2006.

Defending champion India is seeded second and leads Group B, which also comprises third seed South Africa, fifth seed Sri Lanka and eighth seed Pakistan.

The top two sides from each group will progress to the semi-finals, which will be played at Cardiff and Edgbaston on 14 and 15 June respectively, with The Oval hosting the final. There will be a reserve day for the grand finally

Pakistan to name 17-member squad for England series

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to name a 17-member squad for upcoming series against England, sources said on Saturday.

According to sources, the squad would have three openers, five middle-order batsmen, two wicketkeepers, five fast bowlers and two spinners.

Sami Aslam, Khurram Manzoor and Mohammad Hafeez are top contenders for the openers’ slot, whereas middle-order lineup would comprise captain Misbah-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Spin duo of Zulfikar Babar and Yasir Shah, both of whom have played a key role in Pakistan’s major Test victories in the United Arab Emirates, were most favoured to fill in the two slots reserved for spinners.

In the fast bowling department, sources said that captain Misbah wanted to take Ehsan Adil on board for the series, other than Mohamamd Amir, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali and Imran Khan Jr.

As for two wicketkeepers, the selectors have put their faith in Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan, sources said.

Pakistan will start their England tour with the first Test scheduled on July 14, which will be followed by three more Tests, five ODIs and a T20.

Arthur should tone down statements on Pakistan cricket, says Rashid Latif

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif believes newly-appointed head coach Mickey Arthur is jumping the gun by issuing statements regarding issues related to the team.

“Too many statements from the new coach and he is speaking on every issue related to Pakistan cricket,” said Latif. “He is an experienced international coach but he should slow down a bit with his statements and first come and see first-hand the challenges he faces with the Pakistan team.”

Exclusion from IPL affecting Pakistan’s T20 prowess, says Mickey Arthur

Arthur was named Pakistan team head coach after Waqar Younis left the position vacant. The South African immediately said he would not tolerate indiscipline in the team. He also observed that Pakistani players’ absence from Indian Premier League was hurting their T20 prowess.

“There are lot of hopes from Arthur but he should not raise everyone’s expectations. He might not know this but Pakistani cricket fans and authorities can be very unforgiving if he can’t turn things around,” said Latif.

He added: “I have always felt that a foreign coach who keeps a low profile is best suited for Pakistan cricket. In the end the results matter nothing else matters.”

Pakistan Cricket Board sources claim that a message has already been conveyed to Arthur to slow down with his statements.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja advised Arthur to be ready to face a different culture when visiting Pakistan for his new assignment.

“He is a solid experienced coach who has worked with two top teams and top players but he will really have to be innovative and firm to pick up the performances of the Pakistan team,” said Ramiz.

Rameez added: “The key would be to get rid of selfish players and encourage those who were courageous enough to play for the team not themselves.”

Rameez also felt that Arthur’s job will include finding an inspirational leader who can motivate and lead the team with his performances.

Pakistan Tour of England & Ireland 2016 Full Schedule

Pakistan will be touring England & Ireland for a full fledged series including matches in all formats. Pakistan and England will play four test matches, five one day internationals and one twenty20 match in a two month long tour. Pakistan is also schedule to play two one day internationals against Ireland between the tour. Last time Pakistan toured England was back in August 2010 when England defeated Pakistan 3-1 in four match test series. PCB selection committee considers Dean Jones as new head coach

Lahore :  Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) coach selection committee is thinking to appoint former Australian retired cricketer Dean Mervyn Jones as new head coach of the team, reported on Thursday.

Pakistan’s early exit from the World T20, which the West Indies won, prompted a wave of criticism, with widespread calls to revamp the country’s domestic structure.

According to sources, news regarding considering name of Dean Jones as head coach is roaming but the nominated candidate has not enough experience for the post as maximum five years of international experience is required to hire a coach.

However, Dean Jones had coached Islamabad United team in Pakistan Super League (PSL) to the victory.

The newly-appointed coach would train the team in upcoming England series in July.

Earlier, former head coach Waqar Younis resigned weeks after team’s humiliating exit from the World Twenty20 tournament at the group stage.

"I am resigning from my post today with a heavy heart," he told reporters in Lahore.

Referring to a report written in the aftermath of the World Twenty20 in India that was widely leaked in the Pakistani press, he added: "I want my recommendations to be implemented. They were not acted on when I first made them in 2015."

In his leaked report, Younis criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to not give him a say in the selection process and blasted the captaincy of Shahid Afridi.

"We lost to New Zealand, (the) Asia Cup and the World T20 due to poor captaincy. Over several occasions, I had made it clear that Shahid Afridi was not performing with the bat, ball or as a captain but I was not listened to," he said.
